Two different drum UN markings?!

🧐Ever noticed that some steel drums have two different UN (Performance Oriented Packaging) markings?

It's not a mistake!🤔

It means the drum has been independently tested and certified for both liquids and solids.

Why two different markings? ➡️ Because liquids and solids stress a package in completely different ways!

💧Liquid certification

* Tested for leaks and internal pressure

* Includes a maximum specific gravity (density) the drum is approved for

* Includes a hydrostatic test pressure (kPa)

📦Solid certification

* Tested for solid materials

* Ends with an “S"

* Lists the maximum gross mass the package can safely hold

In many cases, you'll see both markings stamped on the same drum, typically with the liquid rating first, followed by the solid rating.

This is an easy detail to overlook, but it's important when selecting packaging for hazardous materials. Using the correct UN performance rating helps ensure you're matching the package to the material being shipped, not just grabbing any random old drum!🛢️

It's one of those small markings that carries a lot of regulatory significance!
